Common Injuries and Treatments

Back and Neck Pain
Common back and neck pain can include sciatica, headaches, radiating arm and leg pain, general stiffness from prolonged sitting.

When starting your treatment, Penny will firstly assess your posture, looking for any muscle imbalance or irregularities.
Treatment will then involve looking at the movements of the spine looking for any restrictions, muscle imbalance and the quality of movement.

Penny will then mobilise any joints that are restricted and massage, stretch and ultrasound any trigger points in tight muscles.
Finally Penny will advise on exercises, posture, ergonomics and self- help techniques that can be used to prevent pain and stiffness recurring

Sports Injuries

Immediately after an acute injury we recommend the ‘RICE’ Protocol of Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. For severe sprains and strains taping is also recommended for extra protection to the injured tissues.

It is however very important to be shown active exercises as soon as possible, and begin gentle stretching, once the inflammation has resolved.

This enables the collagen fibres to repair longitudinally and not haphazardly, which would cause scarring and future pain due to loss of flexibility and poor circulation.

Physiotherapy then involves progressive rehabilitation of eccentric and concentric exercises to strengthen and regain normal function of the injured part.

With chronic pain, friction massage, stretching, ultrasound and exercises are used to break down scar tissue and regain normal movement
